Reunited K-pop/dance quartet MAMAMOO move “4WARD” for a light stick-filled Wintrust Arena

MAMAMOO

A dozen years together or apart has led the members of MAMAMOO to become a leading force in K-pop and dance music in general all over the globe, resulting in the “4WARD” World Tour filling up the larger likes of Chicago’s Wintrust Arena.

It was one of seven semi-exclusive cities visited by a fully reunited Solar, Moon Byul, Whee In and Hwa Sa following solo seasons, who spent nearly two-and-a-half hours on both group and individual material.

Never ones to fall into formula, MAMAMOO kept defying conventional approaches to its primary genres, adding traditional ballads, jazz, R&B and hip-hop influences (in the manner of a modern day Spice Girls), alongside an eclectic sense of visual style supported by numerous costume changes, frequently flanked by a half-dozen dancers and a few humorous video interludes.

MAMAMOO“Mr. Ambiguous,” “Destiny” and “Egotistic” were some of the early soulful sugar rushes, while “Piano Man,” “I Miss You” and “Starry Night” tapped further into the ladies’ seamless harmonies at various speeds.

The vocal confidence and flashy choreography continued throughout “Taller Than You” and “Sleep In The Car,” plus a medley of “AZE GAG,” “Waggy,” “NEW YORK,” “Freakin Shoes” and “Baton Touch” were deeper treats for the most dedicated MooMoos, who got a closer glimpse whenever anyone ventured onto the floor.

Standout stars in their own right, Hwa Sa served up “So Cute,” Whee In dropped “The Symphony Of Fxxkboys,” Moon Byul unveiled “Hertz” and Solar brought “Blues,” prior to rekindling collective chemistry during the brand new “4 Flowers.”

It only got more familiar from there as the quartet headed towards “HIP,” “gogobebe” and “Wind Flower,” bolstered by the momentum of a singing audience and a significant amount of light sticks blinking in the air.

MAMAMOO made sure to let them know “You’re The Best” before closing with the colossal call and response of “Um Oh Ah Yeh,” reclaiming their crown as one of the world’s premier girl groups of K-pop or otherwise.
