Forever champions, Queen + Adam Lambert leave United Center opener in utter “Rhapsody”

In the five years since “Bohemian Rhapsody” became one of the most beloved musical biopics ever, Queen + Adam Lambert have gone all over the globe, delivering one anthem after the next and introducing the iconic British band to a whole new generation.

It’s a familiar pattern that initially took place when the title track took over “Wayne’s World” shortly after the original and inimitable front man, Freddie Mercury, passed away, followed by a rebirth with Bad Company’s Paul Rodgers throughout the 2000s.

QueenYet co-founders Brian May (guitar) and Roger Taylor (drums) have reached another stride ever since finding its latest leader on “American Idol,” whose progress can be traced across their recent concert collection, “Live Around The World,” spanning various dates from 2014-2020.

The United Center got a chance to hear firsthand when “The Rhapsody” Tour returned for the first of two sold out shows, which continue on Tuesday, October 31, featuring all the tracks further immortalized by the movie and then some.

Alongside three supporting players and a production so grand it would be fitting for actual royalty, Queen + Adam Lambert awed thanks to the triple attack of “Machines (Or ‘Back To Humans’) / Radio Ga Ga,” “Hammer To Fall” and “Another One Bites The Dust.”

If each of those sound like they could’ve been finales, the same could’ve been said about practically everything for the next two hours and change, such as “I Want It All,” “Killer Queen” and “Somebody To Love,” all instances when Lambert’s mega-pipes melded seamlessly with an immensely theatrical stage persona, mirroring but never mimicking the late great.

The 74-year-old Taylor and May, two years his senior, remained at the top of their game as well, especially during their respective solos preceding “Under Pressure” and “Is This The World We Created…?”

QueenThe chill-inducing spectacle also included “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “I Want To Break Free” and “The Show Must Go On,” but nothing could hold a candle to bombastically fantastic multi-part mania of “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Believe it or not, the encore was stacked with the similarly epic stature of “Ay-Oh,” led by Mercury on the screen, “We Will Rock You,” a reprise of “Radio Ga Ga” and “We Are The Champions” as Queen + Adam Lambert were crowned victorious.
