If it doesn’t seem like Jimmy Eat World’s “Bleed American” could possibly be 25 years old, that’s because the seminal alternative rock/emo album sounds just as fresh as the day it was recorded and has since gone on to rub off on Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Dashboard Confessional, Taking Back Sunday and The Wonder Years, to name a few.
All anyone had to do was take in its complete treatment at Huntington Bank Pavilion, placed against the breathtaking city skyline of Northerly Island, which was the centerpiece of a 100-minute set.
Building up to the main event, the Arizona-based band brought a near capacity crowd back to its “Clarity” breakthrough, presenting the title track, “Your New Aesthetic,” “Blister” and “Lucky Denver Mint” on a smaller, club-styled stage configuration as a coming of age precursor to what came next.
Revealing an arena-sized production, Jimmy Eat World than dove into the double platinum mainstream domination, including the bangers “Bleed American,” “A Praise Chorus” and the billion-plus streamer “The Middle” without ever losing an ounce of its original ingenuity or integrity.
The driving anthems continued at the varying paces of “Your House,” “Sweetness” and “Hear You Me,” while side two uncovered the spine-chilling “If You Don’t, Don’t,” “Get It Faster,” “Cautioners,” “The Authority Song” and “My Sundown.”
That surely would’ve been enough to send Jimmy Eat World fans home satisfied, but there was an entire epilogue to come representing later and similarly noteworthy tracks “Disintegration,” “Pain,” “Work,” “Big Casino” and “23,” pointing to the guys’ staying power and ability to transcend generations.
It sure didn’t hurt having the fellow influential likes of Sunny Day Real Estate crack open its “Diary” for nearly an hour’s worth of Seattle’s post-hardcore scene shapers, such as “Seven,” “Song About An Angel,” “Pillars,” “In Circle” and “The Rising Tide” straddling the lines of indie, alternative and emo.
As an extra bonus, The Get Up Kids took Northerly Island on a “Holiday” through the pop/punk landmarks “Something To Write Home About” and the Chicago-made “Four Minute Mile,” making it resemble the glory days of a mini Vans Warped Tour, yet simultaneously occupying a revived space in the right here and now.
