Modest Mouse “Float On” and give The Salt Shed “Good News For People Who Love Bad News”
Indie/alternative rock veterans Modest Mouse have many significant albums, but none thus far climbed to such commercial heights as “Good News For People Who Love Bad News.”
Currently celebrating a 20th anniversary, the double platinum project was just reissued and expanded on vinyl, plus it was the primary subject of sold out show at The Salt Shed.
“The World At Large” greeted the ground floor and grandstands as Modest Mouse packed a similar punch as two decades ago, but arguably bolstered by an increased mastery of the material given all the additional miles in between.
As per the original running order, “Float On” came next, which considering the fact its the group’s most humongous hit, could’ve easily been saved for an encore, yet allowed a communal essence to come out early.
That momentum carried over towards fellow front half favorites “Ocean Breathes Salty,” “Dig Your Grave” and “Bury It With Me” when Modest Mouse once again operated like finely tuned clockwork and the passionate performance was beamed across three screens.
Mortality was obviously on everyone’s mind, but Isaac Brock and company never made the subject sound more weirdly wonderful, especially as they stomped around “Satin In A Coffin,” “Black Cadillacs” and “The Good Times Are Killing Me.”
At the primary project’s conclusion, Modest Mouse went super deep into some B-sides, which were found on the EP “No One’s First, And You’re Next,” offering a fascinating glimpse from the neighboring period.
Appreciators of “The Golden Casket” and “The Moon & Antarctica” eras were also given tastes of “Back To The Middle” and “Gravity Rides Everything,” totally nearly two hours of accessible aggression and experimentation that never even remotely showed its age.
