Stevie Wonder has Fiserv Forum “Sing Your Song! As We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart”
No matter one’s geography, background, personal beliefs or politics, music remains the link between literally any language, which in these unprecedented times of divisiveness, can also serve as a unifying force like no other.
In fact, that’s exactly what coaxed the incomparable Stevie Wonder to emerge from a decade-long touring hiatus, prompting places like Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum and a handful of other Midwest cities where voter registration and overall awareness is especially crucial at the moment to “Sing Your Song! As We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart.”
Though the living legend specifically endorsed current Vice President Kamala Harris during the Democratic National Convention at the United Center, where he’ll also perform on Saturday, November 2, this otherwise rare opportunity wasn’t specifically tied to any particular candidate, but rather, a chance for everyone to come together.
Wonder’s current single, “Can We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart,” was an appropriate place to start as the diverse audience of all ages took their seats and buckled up for a two-and-a-half-hour trip through his soulful, socially conscious and downright spiritual songbook.
Monumental Motown moments such as “Master Blaster (Jammin’),” “Higher Ground,” “You Are The Sunshine Of My Life,” “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours,” “My Cherie Amour” and “Overjoyed” were just a few of the front half heavyweights, each finding him, a massive band, brass section, orchestra and backing chorus in mint condition.
The 74-year-old headliner took a bit of a break at one point, yet passed the baton to personally selected protégée Sheléa, who slayed Aretha Franklin’s “Until You Come Back To Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do),” Roberta Flack’s “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” Carole King’s “You’ve Got A Friend” and her own “Something’s Coming.”
Shortly thereafter, the groundbreaking singer, songwriter, piano/keyboard player and producer returned during “Contusion,” swapped lead vocals with Sheléa for “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing” and practically offered the arena a glimpse into heaven itself throughout “Love’s In Need Of Love Today.”
The amount of iconic, substance-filled singles to come was still staggering, including “Village Ghetto Land,” “Living In The City,” “Sir Duke,” “I Wish,” “Isn’t She Lovely,” “I Just Called To Say I Love You,” “Superstition,” “Do I Do” and “As” when Wonder not only built even more bridges, but resoundingly answered his own question that America can indeed be healed.
