When Broadway mounted the musical “Jagged Little Pill,” it not only introduced a whole new generation to the iconic songbook of alternative rock singer/songwriter Alanis Morissette, but opened up an urgent dialogue on many of the complex issues surrounding modern American families.
And now for the first time since a 2023 tour, point2point Productions is partnering with The Lodge Performing Arts Center in Elgin for the inaugural Illinois staging, which features direction by James Shedd, music direction by Wesley Byers and choreography by Rose Kurutz, plus a special appearance by original producer Melissa M. Jones and artist/author/activist Lourds Lane, founder of The SuperYou FUNdationon, on Saturday, May 30 as part of a limited-ticket private event.
The show actually opened the night before, and through Sunday, June 7, fans of both the upcoming Riot Fest headliner and the Tony/Grammy Award-winning show itself are sure to swallow up multiple aspects of its emotionally-charged contents.
In spite of the fact the Catholic household it centers around appears to be “perfect” at face value, mother Mary Jane “MJ” Healy (Stephanie Herman) develops a severe painkiller addiction after a car accident, tapping into the exponentially expanding national opioid crisis.
Her husband Steve (Cale Singleton) is a workaholic lawyer, further distracted by an excessive amount of pornography to cope with the distance growing between them, while their adopted daughter Frankie (Brennan Pringle), who is Black and having to navigate living in a predominately white neighborhood, also realizes she’s bisexual and gets trapped in the middle of a painful love triangle.
Concurrently, high schooler Bella Fox (Bella Ouellette) becomes a victim of sexual assault, more or less witnessed by fellow Healy family member Nick (Johnny Rabe), a model student just accepted into Harvard University, bringing to the forefront candid observations about consent, believing victims and all-around advocacy for another subject often deemed difficult to discuss.
Though this is a non-equity cast, they do a commendable job tackling the intense material, plus collectively contribute to such rallying choruses as “Hand In My Pocket,” “Ironic,” “Head Over Feet,” “You Oughta Know,” “Thank U” and “You Learn.”
Each may have originated in the 1990s, yet are arguably even more relevant now that “Jagged Little Pill” is part of a broader conversation being addressed by point2point with the utmost authenticity, care and compassion.
Point2point Productions’ “Jagged Little Pill” continues at The Lodge Performing Arts Center through Sunday, June 7. For additional details, visit SchaumburgOnStage.org/The-Lodge.
