Genesee gets alternative and psychedelic sides of Stone Temple Pilots as “Tiny Music…” turns 30
Alternative and psychedelic rock haven’t been the same since Stone Temple Pilots stormed the scene in the early 1990s, which has since led to 70 million albums sold and a permanent place on heavy playlists.
The “Core” of the brotherhood remains guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz, who alongside current front man Jeff Gutt gallantly picking up where the late Scott Weiland and Chester Bennington left off, brought its arena-filling energy to a sold out Genesee Theatre.
Rarely has the Grammy Award-winning group been seen in such an intimate environment, which was yet another testament to the Waukegan venue’s ongoing appeal and even more of a win for fans ready to reminisce.
Although Stone Temple Pilots don’t necessarily have anything new to its name, the back catalogue’s best-sellers are now remastered and this year specifically marks the 30th anniversary of “Tiny Music… Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop.”
However, rather than replicating any entire album, the grungy foursome featured its entire prime period, coming “Unglued” from the get go, then plowing through “Wicked Garden,” “Vasoline” and “Big Bang Baby” with unrelenting intensity.
The aggressive attack continued during “Down,” “Silvergun Superman” “Big Empty” and “Plush” as Gutt rose up to the challenge of having a pair of pretty significant footsteps to follow, plus the rhythm section rumbled like the well-oiled machine its been since day one.
In fact, “Interstate Love Song,” “Crackerman” and “Dead & Bloated” carried a similarly unflinching attitude as the original versions, while the especially thunderous “Trippin’ On A Hole In A Paper Heart” left everyone screaming for an encore.
Stone Temple Pilots obliged with a deeper dive towards “Kitchenware & Candybars” and “Piece Of Pie,” in addition to the era-defining “Sex Type Thing,” fully embodying a fresh lease on life, and in the process, attracting multiple generations to the Genesee.
