Hearts will go on as the Marriott Theatre climbs aboard a relevant and romance-filled “Titanic”

In the mania surrounding the movie “Titanic” and a certain power ballad by Celine Dion, the Broadway musical didn’t earn as much of the public’s attention when they released simultaneously in 1997, yet were completely unrelated and independent of one another.

Despite that meaning “My Heart Will Go On” isn’t in the otherwise astounding Marriott Theatre production running through Sunday, June 1, this edition nonetheless took home five Tony Awards, including the immensely coveted “Best Musical,” plus a truly majestic “Best Score” by Maury Yeston and a similarly worthy “Best Book” by Peter Stone.

TitanicAlongside their original efforts, the current, chemistry-filled cast is steered by David Girolmo as Captain E.J. Smith and features a ton of other knockouts co-starring as crew members or passengers of prominence, many of whom portray multiple roles.

Though it’s practically impossible for a show about the “Ship of Dreams” that was advertised as “unsinkable” to not overflow with spoiler alerts since its been a permanent part of pop culture lore since the early 1900s, the in-the-round setting is so absorbing, it almost makes ticket holders feel like actual voyagers.

What’s particularly fascinating about the rarely staged epic are the classes of characters it attracts, such as the ultra elite basking in their life of luxury, the middle class seeking to imitate those experiences within the limits of their means and the working class dreamers hoping to immigrate to America for a better life.

The fact it’s being revived at this exact moment in history makes it all the more relevant and riveting, especially as the scenes transition from easygoing mingling, to smooth sailing, then holding on for dear life when they just might drown.

All icebergs aside, “Titanic” manages to turn doom into a theatrical delight where the strive to survive outweighs an unfortunate ending, and while riches can instantly evaporate, at least true love can last forever.Titanic

“Titanic” continues at the Marriott Theatre, alongside “White Star Grill” featuring a show-themed menu and atmosphere at Three Embers Restaurant, through Sunday, June 1. For additional details, visit MarriottTheatre.com.
