The best-selling duo ever, Daryl Hall & John Oates, may no longer be active together, but their time apart has resulted in respective solo recordings and relatively unique chances to tour alongside other artists.

In the case of Hall, he released an entirely new album, simply titled “D,” plus is teaming with Glenn Tillbrook of England’s fellow supergroup Squeeze throughout America and packing the historic yet updated Genesee Theatre in Waukegan to the rafters.

Daryl HallHeadliner Hall, 78, started on the newer note of “The Whole World’s Better,” taking a few tunes to get sorted out vocally, but always serving as a triple instrumental threat on guitar, keyboard and piano, backed by a six-piece band and a replica of the “Live From Daryl’s House” set.

Individual offerings, such as “Dreamtime” and “Foolish Pride,” appeared as well on the way to Hall & Oates heavyweights “Kiss On My List,” “Private Eyes” and “Rich Girl,” each resonating with the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s soulful touches.

The same could especially be said of “I’m In A Philly Mood” and his pre-Paul Young version of “Everytime You Go Away,” though there were also the jazz inclinations of “Sara Smile” and the dance groove “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do).”

However, the encore is when everything got even more interesting thanks to Tillbrook joining the headliner for “One On One,” Squeeze’s “Pulling Mussels (From The Shell)” and Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes’ “Bad Luck,” followed by Hall checking “You Make My Dreams” off the wish list.

The terrific Tilbrook, 67, and Hall’s musicians opened as well, splitting 40 minutes between infectious individual offerings and the melodic gems of Squeeze’s celebrated songbook on the heels of the band’s 50th anniversary.

Daryl Hall“Parallel World,” “Black Coffee In Bed,” “Love’s Crashing Waves,” “Tempted” and “Hourglass” were just a few, which like those Hall heaped upon the Genesee, have proven to be nothing short of timeless.
