The entire disco era was practically defined by KC And The Sunshine Band, though in actuality, the constant chart-toppers were a much more elevated combination of carefully crafted pop, R&B and funk at its finest.

Hot on the heels of a 50th anniversary, original leader Harry Wayne Casey and his current company are keeping the infectious retrospective going on the “Party Zone” Tour, including a visit to The Venue At Horseshoe Casino just over the Indiana border in Hammond.

KC And The Sunshine BandA lengthy instrumental opening greeted a full ground floor and grandstands, demonstrating the considerable chops of the many musicians, who once KC joined them, were quick to “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty.”

That specific theme continued throughout “Boogie Shoes” and “I’m Your Boogie Man,” but so did the general celebratory spirit of “Keep It Comin’ Love,” “I Like To Do It” and George McCrae’s “Rock Your Baby,” co-penned by Casey during his pre-fame days writing for other artists, even influencing the illustrious likes of ABBA and John Lennon.

He resumed revisiting the group via the galloping “Give It Up,” which was vibrantly wrapped around a bit of the Commodores’ like-minded “Brick House,” The Jacksons’ “Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)” and some brisk choreography.

As fans waved their hands in the air and linked together in club-like clusters, The Venue was certainly saying “That’s The Way (I Like It),” especially come the steady stream of call and response choruses.

KC And The Sunshine BandIn fact, the 90-minute night gave the audience nothing but reasons to “Get Down Tonight” and be “So Glad” a new album is unexpectedly on the way, all while KC And The Sunshine Band delivered its signature moves and grooves.

The sped up edition of “Please Don’t Go” was the final dance floor-filler when the star warmly thanked everyone for over half a century of support, who in turn showered the troupe with whistles and cheers as streamers rained down.
