“Funklordz” Chromeo, synthwave breakouts The Midnight get Aragon Ballroom grooving
The ad for the “Chrome Nights” Tour looked like it could’ve come straight out of a “Knight Rider” or “Miami Vice” episode, and after The Midnight, followed by Chromeo, performed for a packed Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom, it felt like the 1980s and today had a baby.
Co-headliners Chromeo took the closing slot on the heels of the “Adult Contemporary” album, its first in six years, which was released exactly two decades since Dave 1 (Dave Macklovitch) and P-Thugg (Patrick Gemayel) officially debuted.
Together, the “Funklordz” got everyone grooving from the jump of “Fancy Footwork” and “Juice,” jovially moving the momentum towards “Momma’s Boy,” “Hot Mess,” and “Night By Night.”
All the while, the guys swapped their signature wit, showmanship talk box bounce, getting everyone to “Come Alive,” shake off any “Bad Decision” and dig through their “Old 45’s.”
Vintage references abounded throughout 70 breathless minutes of disco-drenched ditties, regularly building towards bangers such as “Lost And Found,” “Jealous (I Ain’t With It)” and “Personal Effects” in all their cheeky, glistening glory.
Earlier, Tyler Lyle led the live line-up of The Midnight, following fellow co-founder Tim McEwan stepping off the road to focus on producing, yet the synthwave breakouts didn’t miss a beat.
“Days Of Thunder,” “Shadows” and “Good In Red” established the chilling electronic atmosphere on the way to the throbbing “Deep Blue” and the explosive “Change Your Heart Of Die.”
The brand new “Chariot” hinted at the entrancing creations coming at the corner, while the ballad “Lost Boy” and anthem “Heartbeat” demonstrated additional sonic layers that somehow managed to sound nostalgic yet contemporary at the same time.
The hour and change reached a pinnacle once “Sunset” served as a shout-out to all the dreamers, Halloween came a little early via the saxophone-drenched “Vampires” and the communal “Los Angeles” had several thousand screaming, “if we live forever, let us live forever tonight” as this particular “Chrome Night” was permanently etched in their memories.
