Three decades of Live’s “Throwing Copper,” Stone Temple Pilots’ “Purple” an HBP “Jubilee” indeed

The 1990s are coming around again, not that they ever really went away, and when it came to the grungy side of the dial, there was no better pairing than Live and Stone Temple Pilots, alongside support from Soul Asylum for “The Jubilee” Tour.

In fact, the trio filled the floor and partially the bleachers of Huntington Bank Pavilion At Northerly Island, where Live took the closing slot of and alternating rotation, led by co-founder Ed Kowalczyk and four touring musicians.

LiveThough the lack of other originals has been “Selling The Drama” online as of late, the distinctive front man/guitarist was certainly the most essential to the equation and had no problem properly replicating the colossal “Throwing Cooper” collection, currently celebrating its 30th birthday, plus other “Top” tunes by the ferocious “Freaks.”

“All Over You,” “The Dolphin’s Cry” and “Lakini’s Juice” were but a few throughout 75 minutes, culminating in the anthemic “I Alone,” and of course, “Lightning Crashes,” which induced even more chills across the awe-inspiring skyline.

Co-headliners Stone Temple Pilots had an equal share of the action to feature three decades of the “Purple” project and a few off the prior “Core,” two era-defining albums that are just as alive and explosive today.

Following the deaths of Scott Weiland and Chester Bennington, latest singer Jeff Gutt could’ve made either of them proud, while the unchanged rhythm section of guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist/brother Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz crushed everything attempted.

They included “Vasoline,” “Interstate Love Song” and “Big Empty” from the main portion, followed by “Plush,” “Dead & Bloated, “Crackerman” and “Sex Type Thing” when the alternative jams really shifted into gear.

LiveLifer Dave Pirner carried the post-2000s crew of Soul Asylum, who are gearing up to release the entirely new “Slowly But Shirley” and previewed the pummeling “The Only Thing I’m Missing,” yet made sure to deliver main bedrocks “Somebody To Shove,” “Misery” and “Black Gold” as the “Runaway Train” roared into the downtown station.
