Genesee shifts back to the durable Bachman-Turner Overdrive following a two-decade hiatus

Many versions of the name with varying line-ups have been “Takin’ Care Of Business” since the early 1970s, but it’s been about two decades since Bachman-Turner Overdrive visited America in official capacity.

Thanks to co-founding singer/guitarist Randy Bachman and his guitarist/piano playing son Tal, plus a touring troupe consisting of bassist Mick Dalla-Vee, drummer Marc Lafrance and guitarist Brent Knudsen, they are indeed “Back In Overdrive.”

Bachman-Turner-OverdriveAnd while the leader was the only original member to appear in front of a fairly full house at the fabulous Genesee Theatre, it comes with the full blessing of singer/bassist Fred Turner, whose slated to appear on a new album, alongside fellow guitarist Blair Thorton, currently sitting out for health reasons.

Guitarist/drummer brothers Tim and Robbie Bachman have since passed away as well, though they all appeared in vintage photos, video footage and were mentioned on introductory occasions.

However, their massively popular songbook was the real star of the 90-minute night, much of which the senior Bachman crafted coming off the surge of fellow Canadian supergroup The Guess Who.

Though Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s “Roll On Down The Highway” and “Rock Is My Life, And This Is My Song” got everyone going, the front half also featured a few of that latter act’s rock and roll cornerstones, including “Shakin’ All Over,” “These Eyes,” “No Time” and “American Woman.”

Besides those mega bonuses for everyone’s bucks, there were a ton of other BTO tunes, from the jazzy ballad “Lookin’ Out For #1,” to the freight train stomp of “Not Fragile” and a quick shift into the full gear of “Four Wheel Drive.”

Bachman-Turner OverdriveTal even turned in his 1999 power pop smash “She’s So High” prior to the punch of “Let It Ride,” “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” and a massive oldies medley revolved around “Hey You.”

As those who packed the Genesee yelled for more, Bachman-Turner Overdrive naturally obliged with “Takin’ Care Of Business,” and based on the volume at which it was repeated, the latest line-up of the band is proving to be as embraceable, efficient and durable as before.
