Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa host Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre’s hip-hop “High School Reunion”
Few entertainers have stayed at the top of their game as long as Snoop Dogg, not only as a rapper, but also an actor, producer, personality and all-around entrepreneur.
Now that he’s been barking for three decades, it only makes sense to stage a “High School Reunion” Tour, featuring those who came up with him during the days of Death Row Records, alongside more recent game-changers.
In other words, Snoop, accompanied by Wiz Khalifa, Too $hort, Warren G, Berner and DJ Drama, was a perfect pairing, eliciting such tremendous demand, there wasn’t a blank space on the lawn or seating area of the massive Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre.
Those who made it inside were met with a hip-hop marathon for the history books, which found the Dogg Father dropping one humongous hit of his own, featured slot or shout-out after the next.
It translated to everything from the Dr. Dre days of “The Next Episode” and “Nuthin’ But A ‘G’ Thang” to “Ain’t No Fun (If The Homnies Can’t Have None),” plus the dance pop delight “California Gurls” and even a cameo collab with The Lady Of Rage come “Afro Puffs,” all backed by the style and swagger only Snoop Dogg can deliver.
He also tapped into the throwback nature of evening, tipping his hat towards The Notorious B.I.G. (“Hypnotize”), 2Pac (“2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted”), and later, House Of Pain’s “Jump Around” as everybody joyfully followed the command.
“Gin And Juice” could’ve easily been a finale, but when Wiz Khalifa joined in for a killer closing set, the intensity only increased thanks to a smoky stretch of “We Dem Boyz” through “Young, Wild & Free.”
On his own, Wiz was a winner with the bounce of “Black And Yellow,” the Maroon 5 tag team “Payphone” and so many more he made famous alone or alongside others.
That’s not even taking into account the openers, Too $hort, Warren G and Berner, who delivered short but tight throwdowns with the hype of DJ Drama in between, ensuring those from any graduating class this reunion was well worth the chance to revisit.
