Florence + The Machine nourish Northerly Island with “Dance Fever” and baroque theatrics
Words could never do justice the force of nature that’s the one and only Florence Welch, front woman for the equally indescribable Florence + The Machine, who fall somewhere along the lines of indie rock, baroque pop and chamber music, adorned with flashes of folk.
As the group dove into “Heaven Is Here,” “King,” “Ship To Wreck” and “Free” for a super sold out Huntington Bank Pavilion At Northerly Island, both her hypnotic vocals and the glorious the wall of instruments could surely be heard all along the lakefront.
Of course, there was nothing like being inside with the skyline as the venue’s backdrop or a set that mirrored the decorative, finely-detailed artwork for the lockdown-shaped project, “Dance Fever,” which finally manifested itself in the collective setting.
Whether it was almost the entire album or others dating back to 2009’s breakthrough, “Lungs,” Florence + The Machine fired on all cylinders, getting everyone to put down their phones and jump in the air throughout “Dog Days Are Over” and championing the right to choose prior to “Girls Against God.”
Florence spent “Dream Girl Evil” and “Prayer Factory” atop the barricade by the front row, plus she fearlessly ran all the way out to the soundboard a little later come “Choreomania,” oozing theatrics while maintaining pitch perfect accuracy.
The band branched out into its most aggressive territory throughout “Kiss With A Fist,” then turned towards the club for “My Love” and even dug out the deeply vulnerable ballad, “Never Let Me Go,” following a ten-year absence.
If anything, it made Welch, who’s always a heart-on-sleeve songwriter, that much more relatable, though it was just the beginning of an encore stacked with “Shake It Out” and “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up),” all of which left faithful floored by the mesmerizing presence of these exceptional players.
