Substance-filled songwriting, soul and authenticity make H.E.R. the leading lady of R&B
In the “era of the anti-star,” singer/songwriter/guitarist/piano player H.E.R. (Having Everything Revealed) is making enormous impact thanks to a treasure chest of actual talents, which include gorgeously soulful vocals, authentic delivery and speaking truth with every stroke of the pen.
After dropping a series of EPs since 2016, then becoming the talk of the town at Lollapalooza in 2019, the perpetual buzz builder finally released a full-length project, “Back Of My Mind.”
That debut, at least in the traditional sense, was the focus of a sold out show at the Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom, which besides featuring the hypnotic H.E.R., also included a vibrant backing band and background singers.
Together, they were unstoppable swaying through “I Can Have It All,” “Slide,” “Every Kind Of Way” and many more from the past half-decade that have found the rising artist steadily becoming this generation’s leading lady of R&B (along the lines of Alicia Keys or Lauryn Hill).
Speaking of that recently reunited Fugee, H.E.R. payed some serious homage with “The Sweetest Thing,” while also covering several other classics from Motown to modern with equal aptitude.
Yet one of the most glorious moments came even earlier when she sampled jazz giant Herb Alpert’s “Making Love In The Rain” (featuring a then burgeoning Janet Jackson) during the chart-topping “Damage,” which has helped gain tremendous traction for the current collection.
Indeed, it’s only a matter of time before the “Best Part” performer, who already has her own Lights On Festival and opens stadiums for Coldplay in 2022, graduates to arenas and amphitheaters as a headliner, making this up-close-by-comparison Aragon appearance yet another step towards her full-fledged arrival.
