Alice Cooper, ex-KISS axe-slinger Ace Frehley bring shock and spectacle to Huntington Bank Pavilion

The much too short but nonetheless stacked season at Huntington Bank Pavilion went out with the most shocking spectacle possible thanks to a pair of Rock and Roll Hall of Famers that brought a slice of the Motor City to the Windy City.

The iconic Alice Cooper came armed with several “Detroit Stories,” a new record marking his return to no-frills hard rock, while the equally legendary ex-KISS axe-slinger Ace Frehley made even the signature Northerly Island skyline feel like “Detroit Rock City,” if only for a night.

Alice CooperCooper was the official closer, but not before unloading two levels’ worth of theatrical tricks and a catalogue of smashes that dated back to the late 1960s, though he continues to leave a mascara mark on practically every heavy-handed act that’s survived the straitjacket.

That meant everything from the horror movie come to life of “Feed My Frankenstein,” the menacing “No More Mr. Nice Guy,” the ferocious “Bed Of Nails,” along with a gored-up take on The Velvet Underground’s “Rock & Roll.”

Halloween continued to come early with “He’s Back (The Man Behind The Mask),” “Poison” and “Billion Dollar Babies,” while the five-piece band were about as fierce as they come, especially shred-heavy soloist Nita Strauss.

The “School’s Out” screamer would’ve easily been enough for a full evening of action, but Frehley sealed the deal with a few covers from the ongoing “Origins” series, his own “Rip It Out” and “New York Groove,” plus more importantly, several KISS “Klassics.”

Alice CooperHe actually tailored the tone to the group’s hardcore fans, rather than strictly sticking to the commercial side, including “Rocket Ride,” “Parasite,” “Strutter,” “Shock Me,” “Cold Gin” and “Deuce.”

Though Frehley didn’t really step too far into “The Spaceman” persona he invented, the sound remained that same, which alongside a fully costumed Alice Cooper, made it nothing but non-stop “Rock And Roll All Nite” that kept faithful shouting long after the gates clanged closed.
