One of the most frequent “Soundstage” guests has previously turned in a general career overview, a Motown tribute, a Christmas concert, and most recently, guested on Kenny Loggins’ episode. But when Michael McDonald stopped by Grainger Studio in Chicago to tape yet another solo special that debuts on April 26, he brought along a fresh batch of tunes from “Wide Open,” which marks his first original studio album since 2000’s “Blue Obsession.”

If anything, the “Wide Open” material livens up a set list that had otherwise outworn its welcome, and while some fans may yearn for the remakes of recent years, it’s about time McDonald tapped back into his muse.

Michael McDonaldThough it was long overdue, McDonald keys right back into his hit-making heyday from the 1980s thanks to emotionally compelling narratives and a soulful, yacht rockin’ sound that only seems to richen with age. Now 66 with over four decades of music-making behind him, the singer/songwriter/piano player/guitarist also makes sure to revisit many of his most beloved oldies, all with support from a wonderful band and super smooth background vocalists.

That means everything from his own “Sweet Freedom” and “I Keep Forgettin’” alongside The Doobie Brothers’ remembrances “Minute By Minute,” “What A Fool Believes” and “Taking It To The Streets.” In other words, there are several sing-a-longs in between less familiar selections, though at no point do the newbies “Find It In Your Heart,” “If You Wanted To Hurt Me” and “Beautiful Child” ever feel like they shouldn’t be a part of the program.

If anything, the “Wide Open” material livens up a set list that had otherwise outworn its welcome, and while some fans may yearn for the remakes of recent years, it’s about time McDonald tapped back into his muse. Hopefully it won’t take another 17 years to churn out additional tunes, though if the reaction from this intimate and attentive audience is any indication, he’ll always be welcome to try.
