With a career dating back nearly 20 years, Latin Grammy winner Luis Fonsi is no stranger to success, though it wasn’t until he dropped “Despacito” alongside Daddy Yankee (later remixed by Justin Bieber) that he became a household name in the continental USA. And considering the video is now the most viewed in the entire history of YouTube (rapidly approaching four billion views), it’s really become a global phenomenon, to the point where the Puerto Rican singer/songwriter/guitarist performed the reggaeton tune not only once, but twice when the “Love + Dance” World Tour stopped by the Rosemont Theatre.

While it’s unclear if Luis Fonsi will ever be able to surpass the enormous response to 2017’s dominant single, his command of the stage more than spoke for itself and the momentum can only add wind to his sails in the States.

“It’s a mid-week show, but you guys are showing great energy,” observed Fonsi (who otherwise addressed the crowd mostly in Spanish) long before either edition, and while some surely came just to hear “Despacito,” the majority of the mostly female audience appeared equally attentive during earlier favorites “Nada Es Para Siempre,” “Imaginame Sin Ti” and “Llegaste Tu.” Throughout an hour and forty minutes, the 39-year-old tackled about as many upbeat expressions as he did ballads, blending rhythm and romance, all ably backed by a four-piece band, a quartet of dancers and a single supporting vocalist.

The briskly moving show picked up additional steam during several rapid fire medleys, which included the “Kissing Strangers” remix (originally with DNCE and Nicki Minaj), “Party Animal” (his brand new tag team with Charly Black) and a Spanglish version of Walk The Moon’s “Shut Up And Dance.” However, the most affecting moment came during “No Me Doy Por Vencido” and its centering around a plea for hurricane relief via UnidosPorPuertoRico.com, accompanied by harrowing images from the extensive devastation.

Following the emotional segment, Fonsi returned for a sizzling encore of “Aqui Estoy Yo” and the obligatory reprise of the steamy “Despacito.” While it’s unclear if this international star will ever be able to surpass the enormous response to 2017’s dominant single, his command of the stage more than spoke for itself and the momentum can only add wind to his sails in the States.
